On the dole?

Postby OldAirmail » Fri Jan 03, 2014 11:02 am

My first unemployment check came in yesterday.

So I need to ask my UK friends (and non-friends too), is this considered being on the "Dole"? Or does that only apply to welfare?

You're on the dole alright. Never mind, I'm a government worker too, pulling OAP from Canada and the UK too. Eat your hearts out!

Are you sending them on vacation or inferring they're fruits?

In the UK the expression "On the dole" means "Unemployed and in receipt of state benefit".

You got it.

I just wanted to make sure that I had the usage correct.

I knew that it applied to people on welfare, but wasn't sure if it applied to the British version of unemployment compensation.

Long ago my father said to me, "Never refuse money, kid."

So whatever it was I was on whenever, I always heeded his advice.

Now, where did I put those pineapples?

I know, but it STILL makes me think of Pineapples

Occaisionally the word "dole" also brings to mind the Kipling Jungle Book's "Dhole", the wild dogs of the plains that Mowgli teased into running across the wild bee cliffs (who killed a lot of the dogs!) and down into the river where The Pack was waiting for them. Great story!! The Disney movies just do NOT do them justice at all.

Being ON the Dole might not be all that bad. It might even be interesting. :D

I just got a call, I'll soon be working again.

My former "manager" at Stanley had a VERY strong dislike for me.

When she would ask if anyone had any questions, she meant SHUT UP.

Everything that she did, was to make herself look good for her higher ups.

The people below her were treated as trash that she unfortunately had to deal with.

If you read the job review of my previous manager, I did a very good job and got a pay raise after each review.

With her as a "manager", I didn't receive a pay increases for the three years that she was in charge.

And if you read her job evaluation, you'd have to wonder why the heck they kept me.

Well, Stanley had bought a profitable company and ran it into the ground.

I think that part of it had to do with people like her. Motivated ONLY by the thought of climbing the corporate ladder.

Corporate HR thinks that if you are a manager, salesperson, etc. in one field, then you'll be competent doing the same thing in ANY other field.

Using such thinking would mean that a good butcher should do well in an operating room.

Well, the vast majority of the people in my sub-section of Stanley were laid off, including me.

So Monday I start my new job in electronic access with a 52% pay raise.

Thanks, Stanley, for laying me off.
