Drivers that make you feel uneasy

Postby Steve M » Sat Mar 09, 2013 8:02 pm

I just did a 'flight' in my girlfriends Toyota, in the passenger seat. She did a couple touch and goes and a beautiful triple roundabout. Does anyone else get jittery as I do when some else is driving?

My wife has a bad habit of getting on top of a vehicle and hitting the brakes hard. I told her that on slippery roads she'll get one heck of a rude awakening one day. She also has a bad habit of what I call "jerky driving". She will accelerate and then take her foot off the gas and then accelerate, then brake, etc. Drive me wacko..... :o

It's like you don't want to say anything and start up a silent relationship. :'(
I won't be booking anymore flights in the Toyota in the near future.

If that makes you uneasy; don't try driving in Edmonton. Home of the Worst Drivers in the World. No lie - I thought Quebec City was bad until I came here. Drivers are idiots in this city. ;D

Seen one guy have three accidents in one minute - backed out of his spot into the brick wall behind him, then forward into the car in the space beside his, then back again into the block-heater stand. A classic 3-point turn. Oy. My personal record is viewing 12 accidents inside a 2-hour period; all at the same intersection. OK, it was 30 below and the street was slick as a curling rink but one hint here: it you know there's ice on the road; don't hit the gas a hundred meters from a yellow light trying to make it. More T-bones than a steakhouse there; drivers in this city seem to think that if you stop for a yellow light, the light 'wins'. The broken cars were lined up along the side of the intersection; never seen such smiles on the tow-truck drivers like I did that day.

Sounds a bit like driving in California... even more of a challenge driving an ambulance lights and siren, oh the stupid things people do!

YES! I myself must always be the one driving. My ex-wife was (and probly still is) a really good driver
and all the guys in my family are good drivers, but I don't feel comfortable in a car unless I'm driving.

What I used to do back in the day to teach my ex-wife the skill of winter driving was take her in an empty
mall parking lot and places like that and taught her what caused the car to get out of control and what to
to do to get it back in control.

Of course, thats not legal and you can't really find a place to do that anymore without clearing out
the local dunkin donut shops of police officers, but it really helped her become a better and safer driver
all the way around. She had a great time when I took the wheel let me tell ya. ;D

The good ol'days. Ya gotta love rear-wheel-drive!

Maybe its unusual, but in my City of Hereford, all the drivers I come across, whilst riding my Motorcycles, all seem to be a very courteous lot, which is vital for my safe, 2-wheel, explorations!

Giving way to other drivers is the accepted rule of the road here!

On the rare times when I am in a passenger in someone else's car, I find myself constantly pressing the imaginary foot-brake pedal on the passenger side, whilst desperately hanging on to the roof strap!... :o ...!

And as for being a pillion passenger on someone else's motorcycle...FORGET IT!... ;) ...!

Paul...Meep-meep!... ;D ...!

A certain friend of mine is an excellent driver, always feel safe. He likes to drive, so he usually drives.

Another, I can count his driving errors each time. Once on a long car trip upstate years ago, I had to relieve him of his driving or face the con-see-quences. Another time, when he was driving upstate by himself, he parked on a hill to take a whiz, and forgot to set the handbrake. One VW bug down an embankment. Another time at Miami Beach, he left the keys in the car, there we were in our suits with nothing but towels. AAA rescued us, but I had to talk them into it as he wasn't a member.

Then there was an ex-girlfriend who had a nasty habit of trying to tell me, me, how to drive sometimes.

And on a New Year's Eve long ago, three of us were headed out. BM pipes up, "I'll drive." ZE whispers to me, "Don't let BM drive." Enough said. I said, "No, it's New Year's Eve, and I'm not drinking, I'll drive." BM got real upset and walked off.

I drive with Zildgian drummers' gloves as driving gloves. The a/c dries my hands, and they slip on the smooth leather wheel, the gloves give traction and hey, you get respect from other drivers when you stick you hand out the window and give 'stop/go' commands. For our mutual benefit, of course.

Take driving seriously.

One of the most satisfying moments I've had is seeing someone blow by me on icy roads and then seeing them tucked into the ditch a few miles down the road. :) Just as a side note: My girlfriend is a good driver, I'm just a bad passenger, in case she ever reads this. :-*

I love these boners who drive the BIG SUV's and think in the winter they can drive through anything, till they
get a rude awakening when they have to STOP! ::) -> I'm only talking about the boners! <- :)

I'm a truck driver and have seen alot of other 'people who happen to also be driving truck' tailgating other traffic at
full highway speeds. That's bad enough on dry roads but they do it on snowy/icy roads alot.

Someone dies on the 400 series in southern Ontario every other day. (401 403 407 427 ETC) Maybe more often than that.. From what I read, the drivers in Euro country (England and surrounding areas) are much better trained than we are here on this side of the pond. A scandal was just exposed here about driver training schools, Willing to accept gratuities in exchange for a passing score.

Goodly morning all...

Having been an Instructor Pilot on many types and never having had a driving accident myself, well, guess I can say luck has been with me or my flying experience has paid off.

We insisted our children enrolled in a Commercial Driving Course with Licensed Instructors and that seems to have paid off. Some of our grandchildren do the same thing. Now the Commercial Driving Course is available at the schools.
The Safe Boating Course will give you a Boating License and is well worth enrolling in.

Driving is a Privilege and not a Right.

The old girl is an accident free driver and she does like to cruise just over the speed limit. Neither of us has had a ticket, not even a parking ticket. (now I am starting to feel neglected... )

Myself, I cruise about ten (10) MPH over the speed limit on the highway but not in town.

I feel quite comfortable with riding in a vehicle while another family member is driving, however, like Paul mentioned I do hit that imaginary brake when riding with some (not all) of our friends.

I was flying several years before I was old enough to get a Drivers License. Drove farm tractors, teams of horses and Land Rovers/Jeeps at the hunting camp and cottage before I was old enough to get a Drivers License. Not sure if a row boat or boat with an outboard motor counts...

About the only thing I have not tried is the Old Girls Broom. It is a single seater and will outfly any jet fighter made me thinks.
She will not let me try it as I do not have a pointy black hat...
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
