Canadian twilight zone

Postby propnut » Sun Jul 18, 2004 3:50 pm

I flew to High Prairie, Alberta, Canada (CZHP) to pick a fare when I found this great pit;

I think this is Snipe Lake;

I guess that is my airport;

Lots of strange formations.

Almost a carrier landing.

Thanks for the comments. It is the default mess, er, mesh. The airport is CZHP and is at almost 2000 feet but the land around it is alot lower. All of the water and some landmarks seem to be at the correct altitude.

Seems to be a lot of strange things. Maybe they're easter eggs. Just don't overshoot your landings.  ;D

i had the exact same problem when i installed any of Rob Gainer's mesh.   i uninstalled his mesh and all was rosy.  i stick to Holger Sandman's stuff now.

Seems there's more than one Snipe Lake in the world. One in Alberta, one in Saskatchewan, one in either Wisconsin or Michigan. I saw a screenshot of a Snipe Lake with elk in the default scenery. Anybody know which one that was?

Hi all,

thanks for the endorsement of my files, ruekesj!

It's likely that Paul's interesting scenery is indeed the result of Rob Gainer's Alaska mesh. He made a mistake when compiling the mesh, which resulted in it setting to sea level almost all of North America! That's why his file is so large too; it shouldn't have been more than ~10MB. The tricky thing is that the error occurs outside of the intended coverage area and thus the file is easily overlooked as a potential culprit.

Anyway, the mesh sets the surface to 0m while the airfields and water bodies with their fixed elevations remain elevated at their correct position. Also, because FS displays high-res mesh only in an area near the aircraft, the mid- to far distance will actually show the default mesh, which gives the impression of flying above a huge moving pit.

There are a few other add-on mesh files that have similar issues but none that affect northern Canada, as far as I know.

Here's a quote from Rob about these files:

-----------------
The following files are no longer supported
( and will vanish off FS web sites )

Alaska ( all versions )
Seaor.zip
NYC City

If you have any of those files , you are to delete them.
--------------------

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Holger
