Oldie but goodie

I don't post many shots as my antiquated system means I cannot compete with the quality I see here every day. I was messing around with CFS1 & thought this was worth posting. To prove a point I reduced the display resolution in the sim to 800 x 600 so the shots don't need resizing to post here. No fancy screengrab utilities, simply the old-fashioned single-shot clipboard method pasted into IrfanView. I used Alain L'Homme's beautiful Spitfire Mk II posted on Page 1 of the CFS1 Aircraft section. I took off from RAF Hawkinge & flew over the White Cliffs of Dover. This is the default CFS1 scenery.



This is how it looks in real life. I took this photo while flying a little further along the south coast over the cliffs at Beachy Head recently. Not bad for an oldie eh?

Thanks for the comments chaps. I wasn't too sure how well this would go down. This is the first time I've fired up CFS1 for a long time & I'd forgotten just how good it is. I'm not sure the default mesh in FS9 compares with it, not in this part of the world anyway. I might post some more later.

I've been having a great time downloading all my old favourites from the CFS1 sections. Most of these files are less than 500k.
They obviously don't compare with what we have now but it's amazing what the designers could do with the tools available at the time. The Spitfire in my shot has a static virtual cockpit, sliding canopy & rolling wheels. I still don't know how Alain did that back in 1998.
Many of the familiar names in FS aircraft design took their first faltering steps in CFS1. These were probably the most exciting times for me in something like 5 years I've been involved in this hobby. Happy days.

How do you get the canopy to work?

It depends on whether or not you have changed the key setting. It should be " control + e "

This is CFS1. The canopy of the Spitfire Mk II in my shot opens when the engine is not running. On other models it can be operated with the spoiler key or automatically with the gear or flaps.

Good point. I got an F-22 that opens + a ladder drops when engines are off. Just thought there might have been a key needed for it.

I just checked it to make sure & I wasn't quite correct. The cockpit hatch closes whan you start the engine. The canopy closes when you raise the gear.

I think I'm right in saying that some default key commands like the exits weren't possible on 3rd party aircraft until after FS2002 was released & the Gmax & FSDS2 models started coming through. It took a long time & a lot of hard work by some very talented people before we got where we are now.

Great shots, Hagar! You're right - we sometimes forget how good CFS was for its time - and even now; it compares.

Just curious - what were you flying when you took the RL pic? Looks to me like a Cherokee; but it's hard to tell from a wingtip.

*Edit* - Of course; last time I checked, Cherokees don't have fabric wings.
