A strange formation?

Postby Mr. Bones » Thu Jan 29, 2004 6:35 am

...not really...especially not around Edwards during the past decade. the YF-23 is now retired. there were only two models made of this beautiful plane.

That first shot is really nice.

the whole point of building only 2 was because they were in competion with the F-22(i think) and they had to try and proove that it was better than the F-22. Obviously the first test aircraft was used to get the bugs out of it, and the second to be used as the show aircraft to compete with the F-22. After competion the F-22 prooved to be better and got the government contract. Thus the YF-23 was scrapped as the looser. Happens with most aircraft

Lovely pictures by the way.

yes, this plane was designed by Northrop/MD to replace the F-15. like with the JSF, there was a second contractor that built an X plane, Lockheed Martin with the YF-22. like you all know, the YF-22 won the competition and the F-22 was built.

two weeks ago the first operational USAF pilot did his checkride on the Raptor. the F-22 is now operational.

the YF-23 flew 50 flights, a total of 65 hours and is now stored at Edwards and the other one at...(forgot it)  ;)
