Heading out. As part of the lead up to invasion, today the "Mighty Eighth" is hitting enemy lines of communication. Out target is a major rail bridge.

OK boys, lets go home. I sure hope those "Little Friends" show up before the bad guys come back!

on the one hand:
poor '17s...i know that feeling, when your flight takes very high casualties and you can hardly do anything against it. first full of pride;on the way home just a bunch of smoking tin-cans full of holes.
i remember one situation from "B-17": i was to attack docks in hamburg, but i lost at least half of my bombers on the way there due to enemy fighters and AA fire. one bomber was heavily damaged and could not participate in the final bombing run. anyway,we attacked the target (missed),took more casualties and millions of holes showed up in the remaining bombers when we were on our way home.
then i saw some smoke trails in the distance, closing in. it was the crippled bomber from before. he was full of holes, had just two of his four engines running, one of them smoking...i was so happy to see that he made it, that i could have cried when i saw him re-joining our formation.
i think this was one of the most emotional moments i've ever had in a flightsim...

on the other hand:
B-17? ...must...shoot....down....;)

Very nice again Roger, amazing shots. If only I could have CFS3 run that well on my system :-/

Well done ;D

Ah, B-17. I remember lots of these kind of missions, always full of holes and always wounded crew. The two engined plane would usually make it all the way home and then crash over England!
The bomb site is not quite as good in CFS3, you don't get the auto bomb release over the aiming point and you can't just let the AI line up on the bomb run.
I had to come down to 10,000ft and make two passes to hit the bridge!
The 190D cuts bombers to bits, but it does not have enough ammo and two passes sees all your bullets gone.

Sorry about that, I waited untill the messages came up telling me I'd hit it then paused the sim, but the explosion had gone off and from 10K you can't see too much. I came around again and it was well on fire!
I clobbered a rail yard also, but the shot of that was not a very good one, so I went with the bridge busting ;D

Thanks for the comments chaps, this sim is starting to grow on me and this was my first time level bombing in CFS3.

really? i've never observed that in IL-2. and the Pe-8s are at least as strong as the B-17s...

The 190 is my top bomber killer. Those cannon just shoot lumps out of big aircraft. The big problem is the limited ammo. However I've not tried it in IL-2 so maybe it's just a sim thing ;)

You have to remember that the company who sells this game is French while the people who make the game are [at least a few] Russians.

I like Russian planes. They rock. The P.11 and the I-153 are among my favorites to fly. Especially the IL-2 [the flying tank].

I used to be constantly bombarded by AAA flak and I still flew because that plane can take a beating. Not only that, it has a wide range of weapons and stuff for me to choose from. It can even carry a torpedo. The La's are also my favorites. They're good and tough like the FW.

I like flying the A6M's and Ki-84's, but the problem is that they're Japanese planes and I don't appreciate flying a plane that lost the war. ::)

The Bf-109's are fine for me and so are the Me-262's. But I also don't appreciate them for the same reason.
