Hi Tempest

One reference that I found says that the red nose and red spinners with red bands were from 1945. So that might suggest a different roundel?

Cheers Paul

Aircraft repainting is something I have always wanted to do but all my efforts end up a grey blank mess :'(

Mail me some time & I'll walk you through it.

Hawker:
Didn't mean to leave you out, didn't know you were online. I posted, then I did a walk about, and didn't see your post.  Thanks for the info. Between you an Paul I 'm not sure what to do with the roundels, I guess I should finish the port tail flash first, and maybe by then you two can figure it out. ::). When it is all done, I can sent you the texture file, if you would like, and I can figure out how it's done.

Hagar:
You might be right, I will make the while stripe a tad wider on the port side and compare.  Thanks for the critical eye, between you, Hawker, and Paul I might learn something about RAF markings yet.

Fido. I'm no expert on RAF markings so please trust the others rather than me. I'm sure you have some of your own resources too. ;)

Looks like you were right, just a tad wider did the trick. What do you think?

I tend to agree Paul on the nose colours. I know 19 Sqn changed their Mustang nose colours in early '45 from black/yellow to blue/white and I reackon 316 had white noses at one time. But full wrap over invasion stripes were partially removed late summer '44 and totally in Jan'45 so that makes this aircraft from the period June to September 1944. Most likely the artist used a bit of artistic licence on his origional repaint.

Hi Tempest

I agree with your comments. The stripes with the nose colour present a bit of a dilemma. As you say, it could be 'artistic' license. I will look again and see what I can find.

I found one photo of the unit from early 1945. It has the red and white spinner but but no 'invasion' stripes. Although it does appear to have a 'sky' band on the rear fuselage.

Maybe it would be easier to change the colour of the spinner to match. It's a tad fuzzy & could do with tidying up a bit anyway. That's if I could find which texture it's on of course. ??? ::) ;)

Well, I've found this pic of a 316 Sqd Mustang MkIII with a date quoted as August '44 with, as I and Paul thought, a white nose and spinner.

Sorry about the quality but I got this off the web and it was a very small pic, but it should be enough to give you an idea. ;)

I think that I have found the artist's source........

Image

"FB223 serving with No 316 sqn based at Coltishall June 1944"

Unfortunately there are no photos of the aircraft in the book to support this colour profile!

BTW, I can confirm that the unit was based at Colishall from April 1944 to July 1944.   ;D

Well, I found one more source which claims that the red/white spinner was applied in March 1945.

So, everything points to invasion stripes with the all white nose  ;)

OK, I am stopping work on this one now.

Hey Fido, how did I become a full time researcher for you????    ;D ;D ;D
