Hurricane Nightfighter

Postby paulb » Wed Dec 03, 2003 11:11 am

Thanks to Hagar, Fido and Hawker Tempest 5  for pointing me in the right direction for the Hurricane.

In return, here is a nightfighter version.  ;)

Cheers Paul

Not long Hagar  ;)

I just did a quick repaint for screenshots. Its far from perfect close-up. Fortunately even the codes were the same as a nightfighter IIC of 87 Sqn  ;D

You've done it again! Great job. Like Hawker said, she sure look good in black. When you get her all spruced up to your liking, I hope you decided to post your repaint in downloads.

Remember this one Fido?
http://www.ukwarbirds.fsnet.co.uk/operators%20%20RACo.htm
Taff Smith's Hurricane on the UK display circuit. I posted some shots in the Photos forum a while back. Might have a go at it myself when I get the time.

Note that the lettering is reversed on the other side. I always thought this was normal until recently. Going by what I see nowadays I must have been mistaken. Maybe Tempest can enlighten me. ???

Many thanks  guys ;)  I really appreciate your comments  ;D  ;D  ;D

Cheers Paul

P.S. Fido, I wont be able to do a proper version for a while now.  I managed to get ahead of Dave on the Sea Fury work - most unlike me  ::) - but he has caught me up now. So I need to get back to that. But its been fun these past few days just playing around with some textures  :)

Having said that, you are welcome to the files as they stand, just let me know and I can send them to you. P  ;)

Paul:
Many thanks for your kind offer, but just ask Hawker, and he will tell you my e-mail account forces you to send little bitty files, or else pay alot more than I already do, to get a larger inbox.

Hi Hagar

Re the squadron code lettering - normally the unit identity letters (two) were applied behind the roundel on the starboard right hand side and ahead of the roundel on the port left hand side. However, you can find exceptions - even in the same unit!

The only way to get it right is to research a particular aircraft as carefully as possible.

BTW, I dont know if this Hurricane is correct or not. I simply used the letters that were already there.

Cheers Paul  ;)

Paul beat me to the answer here! I've got examples of planes with the squadron coeds before the roundel on both sides, on the left side and on the right as well as a few with the aircraft letter leading the squadron codes on both sides. What I have noticed is that post may '42, when the sky tail band was introduced, most aircraft (Spits and Hurricanes, and Mustangs. Oh and Tiffys and Tempests) have the squadron codes before the roundel on the left and after it on the right.
As Paul said though, it does not seem to be a hard and fast rule.

If you are interested, a good book on RAF fighter markings is 'fighting colours RAF fighter camouflage and markings 1937-1975' by Michael J F Bowyer ISBN 0 85059 191 0
