I'm inclined to agree with Laurie & PeteTLUK. I've read similar accounts of this happening by accident, not only in the Spitfire. (This might have been any time over the past 50 years & my memory is failing.) It would be nice to have some references to who made these claims so we can judge if they're reliable.

Some "auto-biographies" of famous combat pilots, particularly those published soon after the end of WWII, were actually written by ghost writers & tend to be a tad over-dramatic at times. I suspect the authors used a little poetic licence. I remember a sense of deja-vu when reading of the same unique event described as happening to 2 famous pilots in their separate "auto-biographies". Once would be difficult to believe. The chance of it happening to 2 people is almost impossible. ::)

Well, I tried it and only got to 39,000 for some reason.  It wasn't the same plane, so I guess it depends on the air file. :)
