I agree with Steve. #3 is a cracker. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

It really stands out doesn't it Doug?

I hope this comes across ok Glenn (deep breath) but I think that #3 is your only real choice. If I'm being harsh the #1 doesn't apply the rule of thirds, so it's confusing as to what the subject is. Same for #2, subject dead centre, not good composition. #4 cuts off the wheels, either be closer, or further away (same applies to people and animals). #5 dirty, clean the sensor or edit out the dust, subject dead centre again.

All of the shots not complying with the rule of thirds can be cropped of course.

In contrast 3 has good foreground interest with the bush, nicely framed by the interesting tree branch, subjects placed near the rule of thirds points, great patterning in the rocks mirrored in the water and in the line of the branch above, and a sense of direction from bottom right to left with the water, then back from left to top right over the mountain.

It's great. Pity you had no fluffy clouds

One other observation, in order to get the dust spots in focus on your last shot in the way that you did, you must have had a very small aperture (f22 ish?). As you were photographing a jet you could have got away with a much larger aperture (f4.5) which will throw the dust spots out of focus.

Try it on a plain white background at home. Set the camera to Av and the aperture to f4.5 and take a shot, then wind the aperture to f22 and take another. You should go from indistinct circular hazy dust spots (if they're visible at all), to neat little pinpricks of crap on your image  ;)

I love the last shot. The dust just adds character to it!

adds age to the shot, and it makes it original :)

Sorry but I can't agree. I think the dust spots are more likely to be on the sensor than the lens. Blemishes tend to show up in shots like this one & the competition judges will know that.

You could easily remove the spots from this photo with image editing software.

Thanks for the feedback Hagar. The dust spots were actually on the lens, albeit the end that clicks into the camera. This photo was not going to be entered anyway. It was jsut a random pic i took while sitting in my friends backyard...

I just had a look at the picture on the camera, and the settings were F6.7 and 1/750. Since it was a quick snapshot, i had the camera on auto instead of manual.

These pics are all in separate categories..Sister's pic is portrait(colour) the flowers were in flower study, the gorge was scenic landscape, and the other two black and whites were open(b+w)

I only studied photography for a semester in high school, so i taught myself the rest. i do remember the rule of thirds and do use it on occasion. What i was more focused on with her shot, was just making it look nice lol.

But really i do appreciate all the feedback...if i can keep learning new things. i'd be stoked. I love looking at everyones photos and see how they do their craft

Was there any manipulation on shot 3? If so, it looks a tad over sharpened........nice calm time to get the shot though, I really love those kind of reflections........
