Storm chasing

Postby expat » Thu Aug 20, 2009 6:43 pm

It was 38C here in Germany today. I must have lost a gallon of sweat on the flight line too ;D The weather forecast was for storms in the evening, well anything to clear the air. They kicked off as I left, so being on a hill, I decided to try and take a few shots. Up until the last one, the storm was some distance away. The last shot was getting very close so I decided that it was time to bravely run away!

These are awesome shots.  ;) It's so amazing that lightening doesn't have a plan when it leaves its origin..

No real secret. I have a Nikon D60 and a kit lenses. I took these with a 18-55 mm and a tripod. Basically, pointed it in the direction of the most storm activity. Set the camera to the manual, F5.6, a 30 second exposure, 400ASA and crossed my fingers. After a while you get a feel for the storm and can guestimate when it will fork. However I did also have about 50 duds on my card too.

Personally I would put the ISO down to 100. Lightning is bright, 100 will do the job without the noise you have here.  I'm also surprised that the lighting is so well exposed! When I do the same the lighting is often blown out at ISO 100 at F/8  :o Also, do you have a bulb setting? You can then just let the camera sit there as long as you want and you don't have to worry about that 30 sec limitation.

Absolutely stunning shots though  8-)
