Monday April 20 - Comox

Postby Rifleman » Tue Apr 21, 2009 1:49 am

Hey guys.......I know you all expect me to bring you interesting shots each April, but this year, I am sorry to report that I haven't been out to the Base at Comox at all with my SLR in hand......not even with my point 'n shoot........I do apologize - however - I may have something of interest for you all.....I'm not sure how many of you know I do ride a motorcycle from time to time....with a certain select group of close friends......some install electronics and stereos in cars.....some paint vehicles.....hell, some even are in the military here......
One friend in particular is a Flight Engineer on the DHC-5 Buffalo....Rob Bird rides a GSX-R 1000 and is quite adept at two wheel handling.....
Well, yesterday, Rob, Brendan and myself went for a short ride down the Island and had a very nice Ride then Lunch/Dinner at the Shady Rest in Qualicum....This is Rob sitting behind his blue Suzuki, and me taking a pic of Brendan taking a pic of me.......Robs G'friend Deb has the bright red jacket on......

Where is all this going ?......well by being military, some people do get to go places that ordinary civilians don't.....rubbing elbows with all sorts of elite folks......maybe even out onto the active apron where SnowBirds may be assembling to do a routine departure. Now, I've asked friends before about taking my camera along, since I don't really qualify for clearance to get the shots but, if they could just get me a shot or two I would be eternally grateful.....up close and personal is the way to go.....can you imagine the shots you could take if only you had a chance to cross some lines......all you spotters know.....just a little closer please......

Rob got up early this morning and headed for work with my camera in hand.......once there he got my camera out onto the apron where the Snowbirds were forming up for their mount and departure of the Ct-114 flight demo sqn........Lucky me, and lucky for you......I always try to remember my SimV pals........

Here's the boys in Red behind their crew chiefs while in the background, Robs usual ride is taxiing out for a morning op......without him on a day off.....

Without too much delay, things got underway and my camera was pointed to the action as the birds slowly came to life......

Really now....if one of your good friends wanted to do this and take along your camera, would you hold back and tell him no ?

Good morning Ken... ;)

Thanks for the pictures and is there any word about new mounts for the "Snowbirds"?

I have been out of the loop too long and haven't heard much.  Just been too darn busy myself I guess to keep up with what is going on in the military.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Awesome shots!!

Now, I saw the pictures you posted on Facebook and they were great!!
You are very lucky to have a friend that took those shots for you but, he would have been a better friend if he could have gotten strapped into one of those aircraft also!!  :)

This is how things look from the other side, when spotting aircraft....not that many of us will get to see it in person..........
