What i would also suggest is getting a Remote Shutter Release for the D40 and also updating the firmware for the camera...

There's a funny thing about Digital cameras...

It doesn't cost anything to take thousands of photos.  ;)

Just get out there and play with the settings and see what they do. I think you'll learn more that way then you ever will just reading about it. ;D

There's a lot to learn about photography, find a few books and dig in!  8-)
But don't forget to practice what you learn.  :)
