Phoenix Spotting

Postby BAW0343 » Wed Feb 18, 2009 12:36 am

Well I missed Air Force one by about 2 minuets today but I didn't let the day go to waste.

Got a couple worth while shots, so the 45 minute drive from my dorm was worth it

Runway 26L: 7800 x 150 ft. / 2377 x 46 m

They were using it almost exclusively, biggest plane that landed on it was the 737 though.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Why is it that in #2 off the wing of the 717 near the edge of the flap...

Why is their a slight disortion? :-?

Its the same principle as the Wing vortex, just smaller and created by the flaps. If you dont understand wing vortex heres my best try at explaining it.

Basically wings work by creating a high pressure system under the wing and a low pressure system on top. This causes some of the lift the wing needs to operate. The distortion on the photo is the high pressure air flowing over the flaps in a circular motion at the edge and creating the vortex which you see here. Since the high pressure air wants to equalize and the only place it can do that is at the edge of the flaps where the flaps aren't in the way anymore.
