Cherokee crash at Sky Manor

Postby flyboy 28 » Thu Feb 12, 2009 8:56 am

I read in the local paper this morning that a Cherokee had crashed just after departing Sky Manor yesterday at around 4:30pm. Naturally, I ran to go grab some pics. Both occupants were fine, thankfully. This was the first crash site I'd ever been to. Even though I knew everyone was alright, it was still a very eerie feeling.

From someone who has had to hose brains out, trust me, you don't want to got to a crash that people did not walk away from.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Jeez- they did not get very far, did they? Is it me, or does it look like they tried to turn around?

Can't honestly say I could do better, but if they'd stayed on the centerline it might have turned out a lot better. I like to think at the first sputter, I'd slip the hell of it and just get it on the ground. We'll see what I do if and when it happens to me (I've been very lucky so far)... but there's no reason to assume a fuel or engine problem is going to improve if you try to stay in the air- usually works out the other way. If the tach or oil pressure gauge drops on climbout, it's time to land- immediately.

Anyway, it's a testament to the PIC's basic skills that they survived, but damn, it was close!!
