Fixed lenses are sharper than any other as they are designed around one focal length. Zooms tend to have sweetspot and focal lenghts with less sharpness! These macrolenses also produce 1:1 magnification and can focus way closer than normal lenses.
If you even want to try a fixed focal just a bit of cash, look for the EF-50 f1.8. Then you can decide if you like these types of lenses or not.

In addition, a prime lens (fixed focal length, as you call it) will also allow a much greater max aperture.......f:1.8 is a fine lens for getting those low light level shots but remember, with a very wide aperture comes a very shallow depth of field, so focus point becomes very critical........ 8-)
