English Electric Lightnings

Found a few pics I thought i'd share. Me and my friend took them a couple of weeks ago at Bruntingthorpe when the Lightning Preservation Group were doing some engine runs.

All I can say is what an awesome plane! Something I'd love to have flown. It nearly shook my kidneys out standing that close... with just one engine on full reheat!

Excellent. Now try to imagine what it sounds like with both engines on full afterburner & a Spectre rocket motor fitted between them all running at the same time. I witnessed this at Farnborough before the air show once when I was walking from the coach park to the spectator area. It's probably the most impressive sound I've ever heard or will experience in my lifetime. My ears are still ringing now.

I've been lucky enough to see Lightnings in my youth. Only the Vulcan rivals it for ear-drum busting 8-)

There are 4 still flying in South Africa. They are operated by Thunder City http://www.thundercity.co.za/

You can even take rides in their two seaters!  8-) Definitely on my wish list!
