GCSE Technology project - Design and development

As you may or may not know, one of my GCSE subjects is Product Design. At first I thought it would be some sort of rubbishy 'draw a new bottle of aftershave' type thing, but then I got into it really well. The brief is simple... "Create a new product". I know people who are making iPod speaker sets, skateboard holders, CD racks, mirrors, adverts, FreeTrack motion glasses, etc. I chose to create a gaming console. So named after a range of motorbikes (the Suzuki GSX) my GSX console is actually based on the Daytona 675.

What a random design. Yeah. Yeah it is. But I like it, lol.


Here are a few pictures of how it is getting on.



This is development. A card version of my console. Badly, but strongly, glued into place.




This is the main body. It has been cut out on the laser cutter (took me a good hour or so to plan it out, measure and get all the lines right) and now I just need to use heat and a wooden rig I made to bend it over so that it forms the front, top and bottom panels.




My power button. I took the generic one, and gave it an interesting shape. Again, used the laser cutter. Took 10 levels of etching and then finally cut it out. I was quite happy with this one. I wanted the entire console to be a mixture of sharp lines with some smoothness in it too - Like the 675 Triple. Probably a good

Game consoles are well and good, but you should have designed a sports car...that would have been cool. Or just come up with a new body shape for Porsche...

I think they start to charge you if it goes over how-ever-much  ;D


The store room and welding station probably wouldn't take the bodywork either, lol.

It is a possibility for the graphics course. Maybe even create a new badge or something   8-)   Thanks for the idea lol.

Design is much harder than development.

We are using Corel Draw 12 and 2D Design to make it... Just simply draw red and black lines to cut or engrave respectively.

But thanks. A lot of effort has gone into it so far. Due to a thing on wednesdays called 'Option K' (we get option boxes for our GCSEs, and Option K is an extra one) you can choose between going things like woodwork, critical thinking, psychology etc. I decided to choose 'coursework catchup'. Though it isn't catching up, it gives me an extra 4 hours per fortnight to work on my project. Not including the lunchtimes I go in, that's about 8 hours a fortnight I have on this project. Quite beneficial when there's so much work to do - Usually cutting things out, but it does take time.
