Geneseo...the reason.......

Postby Rifleman » Tue Dec 02, 2008 12:20 pm

Back in the 80's I was quite involved in flying rubber powered model aircraft. Mostly indoor flying, I frequently did a run south into the States to see real outdoor freeflight at a sleepy little college town called Geneseo New York, when they held the FAC Nats (Flying Aces Club). This contest was only held every two years, but when it was on, IT WAS ON>>>>>
They came from far and wide to participate, and for me as a spectator, well, lets just say this was Mecca.

I tried to get a line shot of the way we flew,

So just to clarify, they start the motor and just release it into the air, no controls?  Objective is to have the longest flying plane?

I have to say all that then leads to a sky that looks like a scene from Howard Hughes' "Hells Angels".

Never quite got into free-flight myself. More of an RC chap. :)

R/C is just soooooo easy compared to Freeflight.........if it's not done right the first time, there's nothing you can do but wait ...........a much more intense discipline ...........

Thanks Ken...wonderful shots... ;)

I was wondering who put up the "Trophies" back then or were they paid for by the club?
At one time were there not some large corporate sponsors for those meets?

No Doug, the trophies weren't subsidized by any major sponsors....entry fees and club dues paid for what was the spoils of victory here.....still, even a ribbon from one of these meets is something to covet......I treasure all my extra bits that I took home from the boys......
