most definitely i was in the passenger seat with no seat belt on when we broadsided a car going 40mph hit my head on the windshield and cracked it luckily nothing happened to my head :)  and it was not pretty and the guy that we "hit" [cause he ran the red light and it was his fault and not ours] got out of his truck and called his buddy and then started laughing at me but then i cussed him out ;)

I've been driving (and flying) for a few years now, and theres nothing like a reminder of how dangerous carelessness and wrecklessness can be.  I myself have a bit of a history, first speeding ticket at 16 (in the mustang), wrecked the Mazda, nearly wrecked the Mustang a couple times, and another speeding ticket in the ol' stang (this time being pulled over going 21mph over, luckily the officer wrote me up for only 9mph over).

And for those who fly or are learning, the message goes out tenfold.  There is no room in a cockpit for egos and complacentcy.  I'm in no mood at the moment to discuss the painfull lesson that a friend who is no longer with me, unfortunately taught me.

One of my close friends is actually driving daily now and I am really scared because he takes my other friends with him and rides around. He's only 17...just passed the test a week ago. I try to persuade him to wait until he's older and more experienced. Of course he doesn't listen to me. His attitude is not very stable either...you know the teen attitude. Very ignorant too.  :-/

AS you can see I am not the average teen. ::)

Trust me driving can be very dangerous, just this week my best friend got in a car wreck, she is very, very lucky to have walked out of it, the police said it should have been fatal. I asked her what happened, and she doesn't know, the last thing she remembers was turning around a corner and a flash of light, then she remembered waking up with the SUV on its side. As it turns out a truck had backed out of a blind driveway, she just missed the truck, hit a ditch, hit two trees, flipped twice, and stilled walked away. It has shaken her up really bad but thankfully she is ok, in my opinion she had someone watching out for her. ;)

I didn't mention it at the time but this terrible tragedy happened a few days before Matt posted this topic. Family of six wiped out in motorway smash

Not much you can do to avoid this sort of thing.

They should block the starter when seatbelts are not on... but thats my opinion.

Looks like a typical early autumn crash to me.. probably a known stretch of road but with the first load of wet leaves on it. Add to that inexperienced driver and heavy loaded car (how do you cram 6 people in a Golf?) and you have all the variables for a bad crash.

Usually insurance prices make these crashes a lot worse because you cant get insurance on the more modern (and safer) versions of those popular smaller cars whitout paying two or three times more than the normal insurance premiums, especially when under 25.

My record: No speed fines yet, nearly rolled the car once, no accidents yet. But i'm starting to know the nasty tricks of it now... you dont want to have the rpms get into the turbo zone after shifting up on a slippery road, as the torque does kick in big time. its quite scary if you shift up from 4th to 5th when overtaking someone with 140 kmh and get the front end responding to every inch tou turned the wheel

and assume everyone else on the road with you is a complete idiot.

Hey. I saw you not using your turn signal going into Krauzser's. :)
Unsubstantiated hearsay, sir!!  >:(

I probably decided to stop there at the last second, although if I were not astopping there, I'd be signalling for the turn at the intersection.
I'm not inclined to forget that.

Crap- maybe my right signal light is out...  :-/

..talking about "lights off"...

I often spot the vehicle in front of me with a missing indicator light, tail light or brake light when stationary in a queue, or at Traffic Lights, and being able to slip through the traffic on my Motor-bike, I often pull up beside them an advise them of the "missing light", and which side it is on!

They are always very grateful for the advanced warning.

If the remaining brake light should fail without being noticed they are likely to be hit from behind when they brake suddenly.

If the remaining Tail light should fail they cannot be seen during the hours of darkness, or in Fog.

If the Indicator light should fail....there is definitely going to be an accident!

A good reason for REGULARLY checking (with someones help) all the lights in, and around the vehicle...

Pilots do a "walk-around" before take-off....Motorists, etc, should do the same...;)...

....your life...and the lives of others depends upon it... :o...!

...trust me!

F.....and the Police Officer said;..."...let there be light...", ...and lo and behold, a Traffic Ticket was produced... ;D...!

@foz: People dont maintain their cars anymore... that job is left to the garage's yearly checkup.
Most drivers only know how to start and operate the radio and / or nav system. Any warning light makes them call the AA

If the remaining brake light should fail without being noticed they are likely to be hit from behind when they brake suddenly.

Same with the idiots who put P5W or P21Ws in a P21/5W position. They either blind you (with the heavy bulb) or you cant see the brakes (both)
If the remaining Tail light should fail they cannot be seen during the hours of darkness, or in Fog.

Dont get me started on half-working front lights... some guys drive around completely blind.

In holland you are required to change the bulb or pay the fine...

Not just these people, but the complete bell-ends that drive about on side lights and fog lights because it looks cool, but can only see 2 feet in front of them ::)

Seatbelt ON should be the law like it is in Aussie land! ;)

But we still get crazy hoons racing and dieing, one was right next to my school :(

But a seatbelt is natural for me to put on... i even feel a bit naked without my belt to strap me to my seat!... ;)
