The thought of any Joe Bloggs walking into a shop an purchasing a potent firearm worries the hell out of me. Far too many unstable characters about...

Yeah.. that's a legitimate worry.. though not much different than worrying what any nut will do with any freedom. With freedom comes risk.

What would worry me more though, is when a government starts deciding FOR me, what I'm to be trusted with.  ;)

Guess it's just matter of where you draw the freedom/risk line  8-)

I'm glad, when it comes to personal protection, we can still (within reason) decide for ourselves..

Now.. can we dispense with politics and sarcastic insults, and respect the original poster ?

I think we will always get these exchanges where guns are concerned, it's the nature of a multi-national forum.

As a Brit I personally find the fascination with arming yourself with as many guns as possible a bit strange, surely one gun is all that is reasonably required? But that's purely a result of the culture I have been raised in. If I had been raised in the US then I've no doubt I would have about 4 or 5 guns myself, it really just boils down to what you are accustomed to.

At the end of the day, a nutter is a nutter wherever they are, & whether they are carrying a gun, knife or hammer, they can still kill people whether it be on purpose or by accident.

So you see the real problem isn't gun control, it's nutter control - & maybe a bit more edjucayshun.

Just think of it as something like the right tool, for the right job. If you're the homeowner who isn't able to do more than repalce a leaky washer.. the only tool you'd need is a pipe wrench. If your able and willing to take on more complex home repairs, then your tool needs will also increase. If you're the homeowner willing to depend soley on others to do the work, you don't need any tools at all.

Though I can follow the feelings of most European guys in this thread (it's a cultural thing I'm afraid... that's what we are used too, just as Americans are used to the opposite), I'd REALLY like to meet up with ThatOnePerson at a range to fire these babies! I've never fired anything bigger than a pelletgun, so these must be a blast... The remmington would probably break my shoulder...  8-)

That's just the one reason why I'm sad why military service isn't obligatory anymore in Belgium...

While one gun would be sufficient for personal home protection etc. I think you guys are missing the point of why I have the ones I do. They are just purely fun to shoot! I know you guys who dont go shooting often or with various rifles/pistols etc wont understand that, but thats my reason, fun.

I don't mind the arguments at all, they interest me actually, how two cultures can vary. I can assure you guys I'm not some nut purchasing these to go rob a bank, shoot up a mall that kind of stuff. Some people buy cars to work on and drive, some spend there money on planes ( that's later in life for me haha, I wish now though) and I spend my money on firearms, its all a hobby in the end, hopefully you guys can respect that ;)

Omag, if your ever in my neck of the woods, I'll make sure and get you some trigger time :D

I must say I wish I had the budget to afford any Remington 700. Alas, I am but a poor mountain dwelling simpleton who can only afford a Savage.

Meh, I still like to pull off the odd 400 yard shot with my trusty 45/70. The velocity is so slow that one can enjoy a nice cup of tea while waiting for impact. ;D I also enjoy a little squirrel hunting with my 100+ year old Marlin 32/20.
