U.S.S. Intrepid returns to Pier 86

Postby flyboy 28 » Fri Oct 03, 2008 8:01 am

Yesterday, the carrier museum USS Intrepid got put back to her home on the West Side of Manhattan after an extensive period of repairs in dry dock on Staten Island and Bayonne. Quite the event.

Good view down the river.

This Coast Guard cutter assumed the lead role in the ceremonies.

Too bad the conditions weren't better. Between being back-lit and cloud cover, it was tough. Oh yeah, and my Tamron. :P

Nice to see the old girl back home. I never did get on board to have a look around.

The photos are fine. No need for excuses. :P

Excellent shots, James!!

It would have been nice to see that!!

So, are you going to try to be assigned to a carrier?

LOL Thanks Doug. If you ever do get back this way, check it out. It's very worthwhile.

Well, I'll be assigned to an air wing, so I'll be rotating between a carrier and a land base somewhere, depending on where the squadron is assigned to. I'm hoping for a COD squadron. Approximately four operations a day, resulting in less paperwork for me! ;D Though it will likely be an -18 wing, seeing as they are the majority of squadrons in the Navy. The exception would be if I'm working with C-9's or P-3's [or the new P-8's].

I don't think that's likely now. It's a sad story. Some years ago I visited  NYC with my brother for a few days. One morning he had a business appointment & suggested I visited USS Intrepid to keep me out of mischief. Of course, it would be the only day in the week that it was closed to the public. ::)

The man on the gate was very kind & let me in to have a wander round the exhibits on the dockside. He couldn't let me on the carrier though.

I see. Since I have the day off, I'll rifle through my old prints to see if I can find some snaps from when I visited there back in 2003 with my dad. Maybe that'll make it feel like you've been up on deck. ;)

Thanks. I don't seem to have much luck with these things. I have a Rain Check ticket from Old Rhinebeck somewhere. The day we visited was too windy to put on the flying display. We were flying back home the next day so that was that. They put on a good show for us though.

During a visit to LA I went to see the "Spruce Goose". Been looking forward to finally seeing it. When I asked for a ticket the man told me they'd moved it the previous month. ::) When I complained that I'd travelled 8,000 miles to see it & they hadn't asked my permission before moving it he almost fell off his chair laughing. ;D

When I went to Long Beach last year, I was pleasantly surprised to see they still had that dome up. To my despair, I quickly found out that it had indeed been moved many years ago. :P

Incidentally, since I was just going through old photo albums looking for those pics on the Intrepid and talking about my future in the navy, I came across this picture of me at six months.

Nice shots James, If I ever go to New York City, the Intreped would be the reason. Always wanted to see that. Thanks For taking us, Mark

I'm glad you were there to catch that... also glad she didn't bottom out on the way in like she did on the way out... :D
I guess after a good cleaning, she was a lot higher in the water! :D

As for that pic: that's just scary, and I don't just mean the Navy thing... ;) :D

Intrepid has a much nicer retirement than the poor ole Oriskany.
