Oshkosh '08: part 1

Postby beaky » Sat Aug 02, 2008 12:30 pm

John from the glider club told me Sunday that Marty, who I'd flown with once on the 172S rental checkout, might have an extra seat aboard this Cherokee Six, which he was taking to Oshkosh. This meant only one full day at the show, but it would save me two days of driving.
We all met at KMMU at 0600 Wednesday...

It's amazing what this thing can haul: five grown men and all their camping gear were no problem, space or W&B-wise. Here's James, an engineering student at ER who is up here for the summer, and Pradeep, a doctor who is working on his PP with Marty... he would be at the helm for most of the trip, and did very well, considering he had no hood time and had never flown a Piper.

Cautiously taxiing to the runup area... Tower was just coming on line.

We let this Falcon go ahead of us so the runup could be done at a leisurely pace (P. had also never handled a constant-speed prop).

Soon enough we're off, and initially the vis was not bad at all.

But we got into IMC shortly after- not much to see until we dropped in for the ILS at University Park, where we would top off the tanks and pick up Marty's son Andy, who is studying engineering at Penn State.
a pretty smooth ride, but we could see we'd be flying into the wind all the way to KOSH.

With M. coaching, P. did a very good job with that ILS.

Some hardworking Caravans seen at KUNV...

Hey rotty, that is a Falcon 50 or 900, not a G4.

So it is- I must've typed the N-number wrong when I looked it up. :D

Run-up is where planes warm up the engines and make the last checks on the systems or something right?

Runup is where you make sure the doors and windows are closed, the flight controls are free and correct, the trim is in takeoff position, the fuel valve is on, you check the mags. and carb. heat, engine instruments and ammeter, suction gauge, you set the flaps, radio, and the throttle friction lock. This is the runup for a Cessna 150. :)

Only things different with the PA-32 are: fuel on fullest tank, boost pump on, and a quick cycle of the prop to make sure that's working properly.
