Best Canon 300mm for under

I'm looking to upgrade from the 75-300mm III USM because I'm a little disappointed with the quality and I'd like a lens with image stabilisation.. I've got up to

I own that lens, and I love it's imagequality to the bone. Be sure to buy a sunhood too!

BUT: my main concern with this lens: the AF-speed. Yes, it's USM, but on airshows I've felt it can be to slow. Catching a Spitfire at full speed prooved difficult. At servo-af it didn't perform better.

I don't want to scare you off or anything, perhaps I still need a lot of practice, but possibly some other members may confirm this.

But, when it comes to 70-300 lenses, this is still your best choice. The Canon 100-400 L and Sigma 150-500 are a bit more expensive.

I've heard some very good things about that 70-300 IS (most of which came from Kris )

Personally, I'd persevere with the 75-300 whilst saving up for a you know what.....(in fact that's what I did ) I managed to get some pretty decent stuff from my 75-300

Personally I would say if you could get by with 200mm then go for the 70-200mm L lense, I had a chance to use it up in the loop and found it a brilliant bit of kit, obviously its lacking in reach but the quality and speed of it were brilliant.

you could save up for a 70-200 f2.8L and and add a 1,4 converter to that. Gives you 98 - 280 mm f4. But no IS and 1100 Pounds. Then you're better of with a 100-400 L at 900 pounds.

Adding a 1,4 converter to the 70-200 f4 L gives you an f 5.6 lens. A full stop slower than the lens itself. Could be annoying at lower light conditions.

I might be purchasing that lens as soon as Wednesday or Thursday.  I've heard very good things about it, and since Canon does not make an L series equivalent (somewhat suprising) its probably your best bet.  When the B-17 flew into KAAO I was talking to another Canon user who had a 70-200L and he said it works just fine, but you have to crop it.
