New Kit

Postby BAW0343 » Thu Jun 12, 2008 4:55 pm

So the other day I bought a Traditions St. Louis Hawkins kit, a 50 Cal. Muzzleloader.  Ive gotten into black powder shooting since last year with my uncle and have been messing around with a pistol my dad had. Well I thought It was finally time to get a rifle. Decided on a kit as I would have to build it myself, thats how my uncle got into it and I thought It was a good path.

Its kept me busy for a few days as the important parts were already made and most of the wood was pre-drilled.

I still have a bit of sanding work to do on it and since I want to make it look older I'm going to stain the wood a nice dark color and then blue the barrel. I'll post a picture of the finished product and should anyone be interested I can post the procedures into how to make the kit.

Can't wait to bring it out target shooting  ;D Should hopefully be done by the weekend.

Fantastic rifle!!

I use to shoot a .50 Caliber Pennsylvania that was owned by a member of the Hunt Club I belonged too.  It was just so cool!!

I cant wait to go out with this thing...  Just started to blue the barrel and first off, thats just cool!  Watching steel darken when you put a liquid on it is just fun!  Also got a nice wood stain for it "special walnut" which should give it a nice deep color.  If I can get it all done by tomorrow I'll bring it out and have some fun on Saturday.  Oh, anyone know how much of a kick to expect?  Its a fairly short and light rifle, and shooting a 50 cal with 40+ grains seems like it would kick a bit.

Well project is going well,  sanded down areas that needed it, blued the barrel last night and looks good, just waiting for the wood stain to dry and then I can rebuild everything.  Wood looks great and should look nice with it all put together.

Now for that belt feed system... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Looks cool... what's with the two triggers?

Just passed my number 8 .22 rifle handling test on thursday. Doesn't quite seem the same as a .50 like that though lol.  :-[

Its a Double Set trigger. The back trigger (the set trigger) is used to make the main trigger easier to fire for accuracy. The main trigger releases the set trigger which then strikes the Sear Bar of the Lock firing the gun.  Essentially the back trigger is what actually fires the gun and, for lack of a better word, is spring loaded to make things happen. The main trigger just releases it.  Hope that helped  :P
