We've had the spits, time for something else. Unfortunately the majority of vintage participants couldn't make it. These included a P51, the OW Lysander, an Anson, a selection of Dragon Rapides and some tiger moths....however, we did get two SE5bs from the great war display team and Peter Vasher's MkI Hurricane

There's a book about it. Well worth a read. The physical restoration was the easy bit in the ressurection of this genuine Battle of Britain machine.

Got to say that SE5 is still one of the finest looking aeroplanes around today.

Which reminds me: are either of those SE 5s originals, or are they both replicas? I've heard there's at least one airworthy original still flying...

I agree, though- it's one of the better designs of that era, and there's just "something about them", like the DH-4.

They are 7/8 scale replica SE.5a (not b). One is missing from the usual line-up, G-SEVA built & flown by 84 year-old Doug Gregory. This one is powered by a Continental C90-14F. Doug is a regular visitor to Popham. He is a former RAF fighter pilot & flew Beaufighters, Mosquitoes & Spitfires among other types during WWII. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/50/a6478950.shtml

To the best of my knowledge the SE.5a at Old Warden is the only airworthy original example of the type in the world. There might still be a few of the full-sized replicas built by Miles Aircraft Ltd for the film Blue Max still flying.

The SE.5a was designed by H. P. Folland who was also responsible for the Gloster Gladiator & the Folland Gnat.

Interesting fact... One of those SE5s was piloted by Vic Lockwood, with whom my Grandad (who I was at the show with) used to fly with in his RAF days.  8-)
