A few snaps from the Easter gliding course.

The Winch - What a beast it is!

Horizontal snow!

The group - Staff on the back and the two students at the front (I'm the 2nd one from the right at the back! :P)
Image

6500 feet - There's no place like cloud base, especially when its below you!

Whisky Echo being prepared for flight at sunset

Sun setting down the run - Still a good 30 mins of flying left!  ;D

It was a fantastic 4 days. And every night it was 70 odd pence a pint at the Sgts Mess! Gotta love RAF Cranwell! Get in! [smiley=beer.gif] :D ;D

Cheers,

Luke.  :)

Very nice.  When you're above the clouds there, do you get down through the clouds or through a hole?

Yeah. We can't go IMC so we have to avoid clouds as much as possible. But as long as there is hole! Just need to keep watching and making sure that you have something to dive through when you're done flying! But i've known pilots to have to fly through cloud and pray its safe because they got caught out by the weather!  ::) :P

What a beautifully preserved airfield Syerston is. Shame some vandal has removed most of the technical site. ::)

Gliding in snowy weather? Not much thermal activity expected I guess...  ;D

Lovely snaps!  ;)

Hahahah! Well.... quite the contrary! I was doing some solo's just before that storm hit. I was launching into quite a lot of snow (which was really cool!) and I was getting 8kts up on my vario as I was flying through the front of the snow storm!  :D ;D I managed to gain around 400 feet before I started to hit sink and realised I best turn back home as I could see the blizzard getting worse and realised that I had to land in it! :P

Badly expressed... I was talking about a nice upgoing thermal movement, as seen on sunny summerdays... Blizzards and storms must have their own very special thermals, but I don't think the average glider will like them...

Thanks for learning me that gliders are flown in less sunny weather EGNX. I didn't know that...  :)

All depends on the squadron and the demands from HQAC and the RAF. 643 Sqn did use to fly Vigilants up until 2004 but were converted to Vikings because of shortages of squadrons flying them. So we may end up converting back one day... But i'm quite happy with my glider! It's aerobatic unlike the Vigi!  ;D
