Well, if Sean and James want to go, we can take my car ( No offense Sean ) and take a roadtrip out!!!! :)

Please, by all means- feel free to do the driving. That way I'll be able to enjoy my drinking more... ;D

Not sure if I'm going this year, but it sure would be nice to either fly in or get a bunch of friends together on a RV rental...

RV rental sounds like a plan!!!   Mark we can pick you and your son up on the way out!! :)

Nice lens, hope you can get some real nice shots with it, looks a bit big though, not something that you would take with you everywhere.

It's not particularly heavy if you ask me. The only issue I found when I used it was the push/pull zoom, that didn't agree with me. Try and limit how often you use it at the top-end too, the quality isn't quite as good at 350 and up.
It's a nice lens, but don't get lazy as a result. Having a good lens on a good body is irrelevant if you don't put any thought into what you're doing and just relying on the equipment, I see people doing this all the time and their shots never live up to the kit they're using. The best equipment in the world won't get you good shots if you don't use it properly. Enjoy! :)

I didn't know that even L-lenses go soft at the top-end. You only tend to hear positive things about this mythical series.
But then again, how many people can see the quality of a picture, if you don't compare photo's side by side.

I agree with your second statement, the (wo)man behind the camera is far more important than the equipment. Although good equipment does give you a head start. I'm confident Roughrider will treat us with some excellent work!

Isnt that all about know your own equipment and how to get around with it? I tend to experiment a lot with my camera, it allows me to find all of the edges it can go too, and it tells you when you went over it, more important even is the why. Oh well, im off for some night shots now!

It's always possible to get better kit, but you can only get good shots with good light and an appreciation of how the camera setting will compliment the available light.

Mark, this lens is also rather superb at indoor portrait shots with a good quality off camera flash. I may post some examples later  ;)

As my set-up will be comparable to Tweek's, I'm hoping to achieve the same level of quality he shows around here. But still I'm also VERY curious about Roughrider's and (soon) Mictheslick's work...

Time will tell.

I take it that you are in the hobby too Golf Romeo Three? Can we see some of your work on the web? ( If it's up here I apologise in advance for not knowing!

Not wishing to hijack the thread Mark, but here is a shot of my eldest from Christmas morning

Image

This was on a combo of the 400d, 100-400, and a 430EX flash set to bounce from the ceiling. I put it on manual and set the aperture f5, shutter 1/80 ISO 200. Flash was E-TTL. It's a great setup for portrait shots that are not 'in the face' of the subject. Centre spot focus on the eyes and rattle off a few until the flash doesn't fire.

I never used to like portrait shots, I could never get close enough, no problem now

Holy crap!  I didn't know they made viagra for cameras  ;D You know, if it lasts longer than 4 hours you should call a doctor.

Seriously though, very cool.  Looking forward to those photos.
