I have a Nikon D40 which I can definately recommend. The only reason I chose it over the Canon EOS 350D is because it just felt so much more user friendly, easier to hold, the controls were easier to operate and it could do everything i would need from it. What I would suggest is find cameras from Nikon and Canon that are comparible in terms of the features you want and then visit your local stockist and ask if you can try them out. Then go with whichever you feel most comfortable with. (and whichever you can afford.)
