Thanks folks, I did indeed use a tripod, I just found a quieter spot at the edge of the crowd. If you want to use a tripod don't let a crowd put you off. Act like you own the place and be creative in finding a good clear location, then let everyone else keep the hell out of your way ;)
If you act like you know what you are doing, then people will probably give you some space, whether you really do or not ;D
I got some more close up shots of the fireworks whch worked pretty well, but I liked the foreground effect in a couple of these. The second one for example was a 10sec exposure. Impossible hand held, and had the effect of catching the reflected light and picking out the colour in the trees.
I may post a couple of the close up firework ones too,
