Afternoon in the country

Postby Hagar » Sun Nov 04, 2007 4:58 pm

Not sure how long this nice weather can last so I decided to visit the Weald & Downland open air museum at Singleton just north of Goodwood racecourse. It's a very interesting place & I haven't been here for a long time. A collection of historic buildings from Hampshire, Kent & Sussex carefully dismantled & rebuilt in this idyllic setting. Autumn has arrived at last & I wasn't disappointed. Even the drive up here was breathtaking.

This is what you see when you arrive. The white building on the right is the old Toll House from Upper Beeding. I used to pass this on the way to work every day in the 1960s although it was no longer in use. The toll charges make interesting reading.
Image

Nice view across the fields to the working water mill where they still grind flour.
Image

A typical shepherd's hut on the left next to the traditional sheepfold used at lambing time. The two small buildings on the right are a schoolhouse from West Wittering in Sussex.
Image

Fascinating sign on the door of the shepherd's hut. My dear old Mum was raised on a farm & I remember her Dad (my Grandad) using a similar method of counting. It varied slightly in different parts of the country.
Image

The restaurant is just through there. Time for a cuppa & a piece of cake. ;)
Image

The market square. The 16th Century market hall from Tichfield in the centre with medieval shops from Horsham & upper hall from Crawley on the left. The house on the right is from the village of Walderton in Sussex.

A jolly nice day out. Perfick ;)

Looks very nice, if a little chilly. Was foggy here, and all the way to Cheltenham... :)

Thanks for the comments. It is a very beautiful place. Well I think so anyway. ;)

No fog down here. It was surprisingly warm too. :P :)

Most of the photos I post here nowadays are taken with the Canon. I still use the little Fuji but mainly for family snapshots now.

Great colours Doug, thanks for sharing. Seems similar to the Avoncroft museum in Bromsgrove, many buildings of local historical significance in imminent danger of destruction, relocated to a beautiful site in Worcestershire.

Come the summer (or some stunning winter weather) I'll drag the family down and get some shots  8-)

Are they "original" buildings or reproductions/replicas?  Just that I'd have thought the logistics of moving or rebuilding them would be somewhat laborious.

Excellent shots as usual though!  :)

Thanks again for the comments. I chose the right day for my visit as it's not nearly so nice down here today.
