i don't get the conspiracy story.
i mean, it was flying round washington on 9/11. why does that mean it had anything to do with the attacks?

I quickly pointed out the fact that it wasn't AF1, but it was still rare (I had no idea what the E-4B was at the time).

How do you know an aircraft is rare if you don't know what it is? :-?

The US Air Force uses the E-4B for a mobile command post during emergencies. Which would explain its being in the air on 9-11. If what it was doing is anybodys geuss.

I didn't know this airplane existed either until I saw it the other day.  As far as it being rare is concerned, I don't know.  I did a quick Google search to find out how many were made or are currently in operation but I can't find anything.

Well apparently only 4 were ever built, so I guess it's rare by definition.

Of course, 'rarity' could also depend on your location. You wouldn't exactly call an E-4 rare if you lived right next to Offutt AFB, for example!

as far as the conspiracies go...it was built for emergencies right?  and in my book, 9/11 was an emergency!    But hey, what do i know?

The E-4B serves as the National Airborne Operations Center for the president, secretary of defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff or JCS.  In case of national emergency or destruction of ground command control centers, the aircraft provides a highly survivable, command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders and coordinate actions by civil authorities.

You might still get the chance.  I think they've got it hangered over there at L-3.  I'm sure they'll bring it back out in good time.

Good old NEACP again. Possibly receiving a new suite of communications before the USAF receive new TACAMO aircraft?

Tweek, the tone of your message seems a little off. If you have a problem with me, send me a PM. Otherwise, me labeling it rare may rest upon the fact that I live in Sydney, Australia, and the fact that I had never seen one before.
