Planes of Fame-part 1

Postby beaky » Mon Oct 01, 2007 10:30 pm

Ohboy, here I go again...  ::)

There is an outfit that does restoration adjacent to the museum; there may be some affiliation, but the few eye-popping classics on the ramp there are not part of the POF collection.

Drool... what a fine Model 18. What I wouldn't give for some time in a plane like this... sigh.

Image

Likewise, of course, the amazing Gooney. this old gal has been around the block a few times for sure, but someone is working on her rudder and engines... she will fly again. Excellent.

Image

There's something about raw-metal warbirds in the California sun... the pitot and intake covers mean this flying legend is still active.  8-)

Image

Puzzle time: who can ID the plane shown here (with its wings laid alongside it)?
Hint: it's a twin. ;)

Bonus question? How about the plane behind it? Easier, I know. ;)

Image

Getting into POF territory now: this super-clean Mohawk looks like it may be airworthy.

Image

Omigosh, it's... *gasp*
No, it's a fiberglass mockup.  ::) Some fresh paint and stick it on a pole somewhere, I say.

Looks like a Push me - Pull you. Cessna 337?

Not sure about this one. :-/ Let's see. Twin-engined, low-wing taildragger, retractable undercarriage, twin fins & rudders. Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon?

At first I wasn't sure what it was, and then I saw the landing gear and it had Cessna written all over it.  I would have to agree.

Great shots!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Good call on the Cessna I think - at first I was confused by the mountings on the win (obviously now I can see they're the boom mounts), and what appears to be one of the fins protruding from the nose (obviously layed behind)...

As for what's behind, I'd venture a guess that its either a Harpoon or Ventura. I'd venture a google that it's a Harpoon though... ;)

Wow- that mystery plane was easier than I figured...  ::)

The big twin is probably a Harpoon, although I'm not 100% sure either. ;D

Great Shots, Sean!!!

Love the aircraft in your shots!!

The last one of the X-2 might have been used as a movie prop!!
