watermarking

Postby FsNovice » Wed Sep 19, 2007 2:22 pm

i couldnt find a better suited subforum to put this in so i will try here!

I have just setup my own aviation photography website(shameless plug goes here www.freewebs.com/ashots ), for amateur aneters!!!! But as part of the package i want to be able to offer people who upload photos some advice on how to watermark images so for example they cant be playgerised. Anyone know of any good free software that can apply a watermark to photos, jpegs, gifs etc

Cheers

I found this after a quick google. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Misc__Graphics_Tools/uMark_Lite.html

I haven't tried it. There are plenty of alternatives.

i don't really see why you need 'watermarking' software, some sort of editor program ie photoshop would do it just as easily  ;)

A note on watermarking.......when you do it, try to ensure that you place it on some complicated portion of the image. Otherwise, if one wanted to take it out, it's not all that hard to do with a good image manip program and a bit of practice and time........Dougs watermark is gone now, and a new one (harder to remove) has been added........

I know it makes the photograph look ruined, but it should only be a copy of the "good" image.......

Excellent tip Ken...You can also lower the opacity of the text to a point where it doesn't interfere with the picture, yet is still visible... ;) ;)

Indeed, I added a new white text layer with a 1 pixel black stroke (border) - opacity = 20%

By saving the layer information, I can show the image with or without the watermark.......

FsNovice asked for a freeware watermarking program & I found him one. If he doesn't like it there are similar programs available.

I think Doug has demonstrated that the freeware (as requested) program does the job more than adequately.

More of an issue, is whether the theft of images from your site FsNovice is going to be a problem.

The majority of images on Airliners are not watermarked, and the quality (as you mentioned yourself) is much higher, painfully so  :(

As a result do you think it is going to be something which is a major concern for your contributors? It seems that the site is aimed at enthusiastic amateurs, rather than budding professionals, so image theft is unlikely to be a major problem when a resource like Airliners provides a much more juicy target.

It seems that this freeware program does the job, put a link to it on your website and your contributors should be more than satisfied.
