Shoreham RAFA - Spitfires

If it hadn't been marred by tragedy this would have been the best display at Shoreham for many years. Not often you see a collection of warbirds like this on the same airfield anywhere in the UK except for Duxford. These are just the Spitfires specially for Ozzy. ;)

The Grace Spitfire ML407. One of two Tr.9s on the airfield.

Kennet Aviation's Seafire Mk XVII SX336.

The BBMF Hurricane & Spitfire landed after their display. This is Mk IIa P7350.  Quote from the BBMF website:
P7350 is the oldest airworthy Spitfire in the world and the only Spitfire still flying today to have actually fought in the Battle of Britain.

The HAC  Tr.9 in its new paint scheme. This is the one in Ozzy's sig.

Mk IX TA805. The Kent Spitfire.

Historic Flying's tropicalised Mk Vc with Vokes filter. Splendid.

This one's a regular. Historic Flying's Mk XVIIIe

Finally Mk XVIe TD248. This used to be painted silver with a red stripe.

That makes 9 examples of Supermarine's finest. I had to compress them a bit to get them all in the same thread.

Carolyn Grace is at Old Warden with her Spit tomorrow...

...sadly I'm not.

October it is then... ::)

P7350 is the oldest airworthy Spitfire in the world and the only Spitfire still flying today to have actually fought in the Battle of Britain


And has 6 (IIRC) bullet holes (since repaired!) to prove it!

Wonderful shots Doug, and I happen to know that the Mk. I at Booker (Wycombe Air Park) is undergoing ground testing at the moment and will reclaim the mantle of oldest flying Spit (after some serious rebuilding) ;)

Despite only being a Mk 1, AR213 (a Westland Spit, as is AR501 at Old Warden) at Booker is actually a year younger than P7350 (a Castle Bromwich example), being built at Yeovil 1941 not being on charge until July of that year, and going straight into service on an OTU. :)

Amazing selection Doug! Wonderful variety!

Glad to see the HAC TR9 in someone elses shots... I Almost thought she didn't do any airshows since Antwerp...

And the Tropicalised MK Vc looks like the Neanderthal version of the Spitfire... Huge jaw...  ;D

Odd isn't it, that whilst Castle Bromwich was beginning to produce the Mk V in 1941, Westlands were still producing Mk Is. Maybe they were just for OTU use. By 1942 Westlands were producing Vs too though.

I flew into Shoreham on Wednesday, was keeping an eye out for you Hagar  ;)

Wonderful shots of a great aeroplane Doug... ;)

I like that MKXV111e with the retractable tailwheel and the bubble canopy.  Looks like a real thorougbred.   ;)
