Well, you've got to give them credit, they did get the job done when they were in service and they've survived a long service career.

I guess I can relate to the old warrior being wore out syndrome..... ;)....cause God knows this old fart is plum wore out..... ;D

Imagine what the new UK carriers are gonna be like; 68000 tons (or thereabouts) and with ski ramps. Lookin' forward to them!

I don't think the new carriers will have ski jumps on them. I know all the drawings still seem to show it that way but the F35 cannot take off using a ramp so the ships (I believe) have been modified with catapults instead.

I've heard the US Navy is going to Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System - EMALS.

Really? So they'll be doing CTOL on the new carriers, with arrestor wires, or are they still going to land vertically?

Could you post a link to where you found this information?

Yeah, I was probably a bit harsh on the old girls there... they're not all that bad, but in this modern world they do seem rather puny... which is why I'm keen on the new carriers, they look modern and capable.

Maybe we ought to preserve one of the 'Invincible class' carriers - you know, like HMS Belfast has been preserved.

It was on here somewhere quite a while ago. But with the central lift fan instead of the vectored thrust of the Harrier it cannot take off using a ski jump. Also, it's too heavy to take off vertically when fuel and bombed up. I think I heard something about them trying to fix that problem though.
