So let me get this straight.......the guy in the first one is essentially holding a lit rocket up-side-down in his hands with no face protection at all.......?

Im sure it's traditon look at all shots theres not just one holding it. I would be kind of scared to do that but thats what they call "Trust in your equipment." Americans do it to just with roman candles not large things the size of a bomb ;D

Like Gunnerman said, it's some sort of tradition, I vaguely remember seeing something about it on T.V. once, but I don't remember any details.

It is a tradition and a great honour to those holding the pots. At the end of the burning there is a big boom and an upwards and downwards explosion. I have some shots in which you can basically see people engulfed by fireworks, might show some later if you are interested.

Fireworks can be bought here everyday and can also be lit every day, they're not what we would call "Heavy" so they don't explode big time. However since most Japanese are slightly insane... even small Fireworks are dangerous... :D

The Japanese are the craziest people I've seen so far but also the most polite and kind. being here for only three weeks is a great experience, and 'm already thinking on ways of returning here for a prolonged period, I have much to tell you in due time

No thanks, I'd rather not see some Japanese guy having their heads blown off and their arms burnt to cinders, if it's all the same to you... ;D

Naah, just kidding, let's see 'em!

P.S. Had to mark this...sorry in advance if this irritates anyone...this is my 1000th post.

Neat shots 8-)  Out of curiosity hows the English language in Japan :-?  One place I would like to visit someday but working on learning to speak/read/write Chinese instead.

If I'm thinking right the hand held fireworks is a tradition which has to do with a boys transition into manhood.  They are handmade by the boys fathers, they consist of a bamboo pipe hand packed with gunpowder then wrapped in a lot of rope.  Then on the big night the boys hold them for the duration of the fire show to prove courage.  Whether this is the same festival or not I'm not sure but pretty sure thats the story behind the big flame shooters.

Either way...Don't think I would want to hold one while lit, just a big stick of dynamite to me :o

I know a few Japanese words, so I can follow a bit more of conversations than people who don't know words. Knowledge of English is virtually non-existent where I am, however one might expect that in the larger city's it's slightly better.

Should you try to speak english, forget the principal of sentences and just say the main word. even better if you know a bit of Jenglish... Basically a different manner of pronounciation. that at least gives them the idea of knowing where the words you say end.

Book => Book-u not a hard U but more like a combo of u and the e from The.... bit strange I know :D

Isn't that the festival were before the firework goes off in your hand you are a boy and when it goes off and it is done you are a man or something like that.
