Haha! yeah we tried.  We figured it might be a quick way to repay all of our student loans, but unfortunately no such luck. ;D

I've seen similar things in a Chipmunk over Cambridge but alas didn't own a camera in those days to photograph such a lovely view! Nice one ;)

Close. we were actually closer to 4000 feet MSL at the time, about 3500 feet above the ground.  My student got the idea that if we dove towards it we might go through it.  ;D He didn't realize that a rainbow is a play on light and is a matter of perspective.  I thought that was rather amusing.  As we traveled towards it it did get smaller and smaller eventually to the point where it was a complete circle.  My camera wouldn't have been able to capture the entire thing though as part of the circle was below the airplane.
