Looking south to Milwaukee, 25 miles away...


Over Port Washington, Wisconsin, looking north along the shore of Lake Michigan...


I had to land at West Bend to make it a "legal" cross country, so I got a picture of the NDB VOR (duh!) there...


Back in the air, and a little north-west, flying at 6500 ft over the southern tip of Lake Winnebago...


Of course, my camera battery died, so this was the last picture I was able to take of what will be the busiest airport in the world in about a month and a half...

Thanks for the comments guys.  That's Oshkosh, and like Roughrider said, it will be the busiest airport in the world during AirVenture.  I would have landed there, but I had just gotten up to 6500 ft, and I didn't really want to come right back down again.

Hey.. are you going to fly into  Oshkosh ?  I'm planning on landing there Friday the 27th. I'll be flying out of KOSU (Columbus Ohio).  I'm not camping this year (one crack at the community showers last year, was enough for me); I'm staying with friends in Green Bay. I know Rotty's gonna be there too. We had talked about flying in together, but I'm only staying one night and then on to the U.P. and a sweep of the islands (Mackinac, Beaver, Drummond and Boise Blanc to look at property).

If you don't fly in, I was talking to Rotty about flying in and out (just to do it). It's quite an experience.. even from the right seat (even from the back seat).

I'll be in a red/blue on white C172, N581ES..


Oh.. and the bowling pin antenna is a VOR

Nice set there- looks like you had some superb flying weather.

Good thing antenna-spotting is not part of the instrument practical test... now that Brett has corrected you, I wonder if you know what an NDB looks like...?

Re: "the busiest airport in the world".... Wittman Regional Airport at Oshkosh handles about 25,000 arrivals and departures during the week of Airventure, making the claim official (JFK, by contrast, averages less than 7000 per week).

I wasn't planning on flying in, I think the left seat would be more stressful than fun for me. But if you guys are just flying in and out for the heck of it, I'd be happy to pay my "pro rata" share for a backseat ride, that would be quite an experience I couldn't pass up.


And I see now why I thought that was an NDB.  When I first saw it on the sectional, I only saw the NDB frequency box and the little dot array around the airport that meant it had an NDB on it, and I must have been too focused on flying to notice the VOR frequency box just above it.  I had always thought NDBs looked like a radio antenna, and I thought this was an awfully strange NDB, which was part of the reason why I took a picture of it.  Oh well, live and learn.

You're more than welcome to see that hornet's nest from  the air.. right seat or back.. however it works out. If the weather cooperates; I'll fly in and out as many times as you guys are up to  :)

It's not hard, so much as crowded. But everyone there is aware and a little intimidated, so it's anything but unsafe. Worst case scenario, you just bail out and announce it. You won't be the only one doing so. People have trouble hitting the middle of the runway (going slow enough to come to a stop) for some reason. They have everybody going 90kias way out, so it all unfolds nice and slowly.

Go to the site and download the info for flying in... then practice that RIPON/FISKE approach in the sim  :)
