Some impressions of Biggin Hill

Not the best Biggin Hill Air Fair I've been to but it was an enjoyable day out with some interesting moments.

Here's something you don't see every day. Taken during the practice session before the show. Guy Westgate inverted in his Swift S-1 glider in formation with the Extra 300L tug.

This sequence was taken later during the show. The S-1 is on tow. The Extra 300L is based at Shoreham & flown by John Gowdy or Justyn Gorman.




A few impressions of a varied show. The Red Arrows in the static park.


The Typhoon & Spitfire formation opened the flying display.


The Dr.1 & Nieuport 17 replicas share the same hangar at Popham. Nice to see them in the air.



Royal Navy Merlin.


I'm told this is the latest 747-400. Not sure what it was doing here but why not?

You're right that's something I don't see every day, or at all for that matter.  Your 747 photo is pretty cool as well. Didn't Boeing stop production of the 747-400 recently?

Have to say I was disappointed at the 747 display. If anyone saw the 747 of South African Airways "Springbok 1" at Duxford a couple of years ago you will  know what I mean.

Have to say I was disappointed at the 747 display. If anyone saw the 747 of South African Airways "Springbok 1" at Duxford a couple of years ago you will  know what I mean.

What I dont understand is why.....If I want to see a 747 Ill go and plonk myself at the end of a runway at EGLL.....

Now one good heavy display was the RNZAF 757...awesome

Must admit to thinking the same. I suppose it filled a gap in the display schedule. Last year we had the complete Air Atlantique historic airliner fleet which was much better.

I wouldn't know. My information came from the display commentator who is not known for getting his facts right.

The point of a display (most of the time) is to show what an aircraft can really do outside of it's restricted day to day use, be it military or civil. If you saw the 747 at Duxford, in the same vane as other aircraft at the display, they showed what it could really do...............it would have made your jaw drop.

If you saw the 747 at Duxford, in the same vane as other aircraft at the display, they showed what it could really do...............it would have made your jaw drop.

Exactly. A 747 at a place like that is just a marvelous treat, even if they don't horse it around at all.

The Glider Extra display, that was another jaw dropper. The Glider was doing 360 rolls and flying inverted on th tow rope. Then the Extra did it too. Then they climbed to altitude and separated. The glider then did a display that should have ripped it's wings off .........Extra stuff, but without an engine.

it was rather good...though i think i preferred last year's Fox Glider....it had a nicer paint job
