I only use a Kodak DX7590 5.0 Mp with a 10X optical zoom lens and it cost me a little over $300.00 three years ago.  You now can get something better for less money!!  I brought my Wife a Kodak P850 5.1 Mp with a 12X optical zoom lens and image stabilization for about $275.00.

 Granted there is a DSLR and a good lens in my future but, you still can get decent results with a point and shoot!!
