Average height of a 11 year old is about 4'9"...I'm thinking you need atleast six more inches to see over the dash.

Even at age 17, I still pity the unfortunate soul who makes the mistake of handing me controls...God knows, the first thing I always do is kick the yoke and rudder push the accelerometer to as far as the airplane can take it...

That would be about the same as the legendary Cecil Pashley, pioneer aviator, crazy pilot, flying instructor in two world wars and the best darned pilot I ever knew.

My Dad let me also take controls of a 172 when I was 11. Now he lets me do the pattern and some of the approach. Hopefully in a few years I will get my liscence,,, then a few years after that my ATPL.

I broke the 'sound barrier' in August 1959 when I was 16. The aircraft was a Hawker Hunter T.7 based at RAF Chivenor in North Devon. It's quite possible that I was the youngest person to have done so at that time.

The seats in the later Skyhawks are fully adjustable... At 5' 9" I can crank the seat up until my head's almost hitting the headliner, so I think someone just under 5' would do OK if the seat was in good working order.
Hint: on some of the more worn-out ones, you have to get out and crank it; it'll never budge with your weight on it. Ah, rentals...  ::)

But there's also the matter of reaching the rudder pedals... ;D
