Another taste of Popham

Postby Hagar » Tue Apr 10, 2007 4:31 am

One of the regulars showing how it's done. I think arrival is an appropriate description. All the shots are in sequence. I'll leave you to work it out. ;)

Lovely shots there. Looks like a nice approach for the pilots.

nice Yak 55 there, nice paint scheme.

I bet a new spotter would need a fresh set of undershorts after shot number three. :o

Great shots, Doug. :)

Great shots, Doug. :)

Look at the rudder deflection... I doubt it was headed for Hagar when he took that shot.

Or... maybe not... he's using coordinated rudder... what was going on there, exactly?   :-?
Well done, Doug- always good to see those neat little European "exotics" !! ;D

Indeed it wasn't. I might be keen but not that keen. ;)

Great to be in the right place at the right time Doug........I agree, you only have one chance to shoot when you have no idea whats coming........good catch ........ 8-)

In addition to the neat slip sequence, I also noticed those huge spades to balance out the massive ailerons......I'm thinking that at low speed the stick must be on the heavy side for full deflection inputs...? :-?

It's a sort of sideslip (forward slip if you prefer) with the wrong wing down. The aircraft is moving from left to right in all but the last shot. Here's the missing first shot in the sequence. http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/da-IMG_8638pm.jpg

AH-HA!! I knew he was slipping, but it didn't make sense with the right wing down... must have only done it for a moment, to get lined up better. Hold that input for long while slipping "the wrong way" and you could have a little situation on your hands...  :o

In that third shot i have just noticed. The wheels look like they are hanging there on thin strips of wire!! simply due to  the angle of the aircraft and camera. Nice shot Hagar.

I suspect he was using the forward facing wing to slow down.

LOL- I now that effect well: "So what was it doing?" -"Well, I was too busy taking pictures to notice..."  :D

He was no doubt slipping to slow down- that's what it's all about; slowing up to increase the descent rate, instead of diving, which will produce too much airspeed, or mushing down, which blocks your view of the runway, especially in something like that Yak, with its big round engine and forward-mounted wing.
Which is what puzzles me... I have no idea how he could see much at all with the forward wing raised... but I'm sure if I asked him, he'd say something like "Well, I was assuming it was still where I saw it a moment before...: ;D
