DOD to Experiment with land-based Aircraft Carriers

Associated Press Saturday, March 31, 2007 9:03 AM

Department of Defense secretary Robert Gates held a press conference Friday Afternoon to discuss the Department's ongoing research into Land-Based Aircraft Carriers (LBAC).  The LBACs are intended to improve military logistics.  Aircraft will soon be able to be moved between take off points without wasting highly expensive jet fuel.  Secretary Gates told the media, "Land-Based Aircraft Carriers offer great potential.  We predict that LBACs will become an integral part of aircraft movement in all five branches of the military.  In addition, they will save the DOD billions of dollars that would have been spent on Jet Fuel, helping reduce costs and relieve our dependancy on foreign oil."

Currently, the DOD is doing preliminary research and developent using a fleet of Chevy Lumina-based LBACs.  The fleet has had minimal success.  One Air Force Test Pilot who wished to remain anonymous said that, "The test models are simply to short.  You can't land an airplane on a vehicle that is shorter than the plane itself."  He added that the Chevy Luminas on which the test models are based simply aren't strong enough.  "A fighter jet lands with an incredible amount of force.  A typical passenger vehicle can't handle that amount of stress.  If the program is to have any success, they will have to develop LBACs from scratch."  When asked about the success of the test models, Seceretary Gates said that, "Research and development is ongoing and we are looking into any potential problems the test fleet is having."
