Air Fest 2007 - part 5: "mad props"!!

Postby beaky » Sun Apr 01, 2007 6:22 pm

Way down at the end of the flight line, I found some nice surprises... I know a few SimVers who will be very happy about this thread... ;D

First was this terrific Cessna "Mixmaster"... a crusty old veteran still in military configuration.

The rear prop must be quite a surprise to the unwary...hence all the warnings.

The back was stuffed with funky old radio gear, and the office was surprisingly well-equipped... i didn't get a chance to ask the owner/operator about the HUD.

Moving along: another lovely old Cessna: a Bird Dog. This one was a bit cordoned-off, so no close-ups.

My heart skipped a beat when I spied the Flagship Detroit DC-3... what a nice surprise!!!

Built in 1937, and currently flying while being restored to her former glory. Just gorgeous...

Maybe I'm weird, but I'd rather spend two days flying across the US in this than 6 hours in any modern jetliner...great job they've done here. They will soon be carrying pax on short flights for $150 a head... she's based in Kansas City, where AA has graciously provided free hangar space and an office for the foundation that owns her.

The office...I probably should have asked to have a seat, but I think I'll wait until I scrounge the money for a type rating. I spoke at great length with another crew member who told me to get my multi cert. and give them a call... he also was quite familiar with this site and the MAAM-Sim DC-3... he told me that they keep the throttles at 2900 on approach in this bird because the engines don't like to get near idle in flight- suggested I try that in the sim. Could require a little climb to slow down, but according to him, that's the way it's done. Nice guy- in all the DC-3-induced euphoria, I neglected to introduce myself. He's also currently working on his B-25 rating... must be nice. ;D

Just some more shameless Dc-3 pornography... I love how there are traces of grease around the rivets and seams that will never buff out. There's a free repaint of this one available at MAAM-Sim...

I really need to get myself a membership.  I was looking at their calender and the Kansas Aviation Expo is 2 weeks after I move in at KU, so I'd try and go to it and apparently they offer rides on the DC-3 the days before the expo...that would be amazing.   I'll be going back to Kansas at some point in either June or July for orientation, I plan on going to the Airline History Museum in KC if I can convince my parents and I might just try and find out if I can pay Flagship Detroit a visit ;)
