About the same size as a B-17, but with a sizably bigger bomb bay, the only downside of the B-17's design...

True.
In addition....
The official specs of the B-17 said it could carry a 16,000 lb bomb load.
However, this was just an enginering fantasy.
When you factored in a 10 man crew, a full load of fuel, the masive amounts of defensive ammo needed, the B-17 could/would only carry about a 5,000 lb bomb load.
The Lancaster's bomb load was also restricted by the same weight trade offs and the result was that fully loaded, they both carried simular bomb loads under the same conditions.


Having actually toured the inside of a B-17 I was struck about just how small the actual bomb bay is.
