West and wewaxation at wast? part3 ("wast")

Postby beaky » Fri Sep 22, 2006 6:46 pm

It always rains when I camp, so I've become a whiz at quickly setting up camp, making a fire, and getting dinner on the table before it starts. Mmmm... fire-charred burgers.

Image

La specialite de maison- burgers on good oat bread with mac and cheese. and a Heinie to wash it down. Camping's good, as long as you have food and beer.

So yes, it rained... as soon as I finished eating, all hell broke loose. A cell or twenty marched through the area, dumping copious amounts of rain and gusting enough to threaten the tent, which leaked like a seive. Despite my liberal Scotch-Guarding, the coating on the fabric was shot... it was like sheltering under a piece of cheesecloth. It poured all night long, and in the morning there was an inch of water in some areas inside the tent. Good thing I was on an air mattress...

I set my alarm to wake up at around 2AM, in the hopes that the rain might stop and a hole in the clouds might appear, but it was still overcast. the rain let up briefly, so I started up the fire again, and contemplated it for awhile. I enjoy that.

In the morning, during another lull in the storms, this cricket advised me to break camp before it started up again. He also advised me to throw the tent in the dumpster at the visitor center on my way out- no way was I going to set up , dry out, and try to waterproof that soggy old thing, after schlepping it into the loft.
Wise cricket.
I laughed as I threw the tent away- there was already another one in the dumpster.
I kept the aluminum poles, though- you never know.

A not-unpleasant drive through the misty woods...

There's a nice overlook at the visitor center.

There's a saying in my Boy Scout troop. "If it's not rain, it's not a camping trip!" :) Great shots, Sean. ;)

I was here:

Not anywhere near as mountainous as the 'Dacks, but I was a little surprised by the ridge formations. Tectonic, I think...

I normally don't drink Heineken, but when I stopped in town to get beer and ice, it was either that or... well, let's just say I should've brought some nice pale ale or something with me, but the Heineken did the trick. ;D

Yes, it's very pleasant. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get to do any star-gazing, but the fresh air (if no sunshine) did me some good.

Peg enjoyed it, too- she's even happier laying around in the woods than she is laying around on the sofa at home. ;D
