Paul.

I knew exactly what he meant by Lense. Now though that you've changed it to Lens I feel less sure of myself... :P ;D

I have a Canon EF 100-300mm, not the same lens as the 75-300mm but it works just fine.

75-300mm is 4x zoom which is more than enough, a 28-300mm would be more convenient but give lower quality pictures in the same price bracket.  A "one size fits all" lens is going to be full of compromises.

What camera are you planning to mount this lens to?  If it's something with a smaller sensor like the EOS 350D, your lens will be effectively increased by a factor of 1.6 so a 300mm behaves like a 480mm.

Yep, that's the same camera as mine.  It's a great camera, I'm having lots of fun with it ;D

US name: Canon Digital Rebel XT
European name: Canon EOS 350D
Japanese name: Canon EOS Kiss Digital N

Any lens you put on the front will function as if 1.6 times longer than on a 35mm film camera, so the 75-300mm will appear to be a 120-480mm.  Very useful for airshows but watch out for camera shake at the long end of the zoom!  Unfortunately the 18-55mm lens therefore functions like a 29-88mm which is less useful for landscape photos.

Depends on how much you're paying and which model you're looking at - is it a Mk II or III, does it have USM, etc.

Here is an excellent site, read at least this page before buying anything.

I used the 75-300 USM MKII for a few years before I upgraded.

Not a bad lens, quality is a bit iffy at times but considering how inexpensive it is it's pretty much perfect when your on a budget.
