Douarnenez 2006

Postby Woodlouse2002 » Mon Aug 07, 2006 11:32 am

Twas holiday time again. That meant a trip to france, nice boats, nice girls drinking lots and eating little. ;D

The start of the days racing. Somehow the French had managed to translate the welcome pack to the festival yet couldn't translate the race instructions. Therefore no one knew where they were going and we led a dozen boats round the wrong course.

The dolphin that terrorised the harbour. He didn't like oars and actually stole one from a man who was sculling. Apparently he also cause me to be pushed out of a dinghy at 2 in the morning.

The mighty Cancalais. Replica fishing Lugger. This pic is now my desktop.
Image

Taken five minutes later when she crossed our bow.

Replica pilot cutter. Huge sail plan but still as slow as a bus. ;D
Image

Biggest red ensign i've ever seen. Very effective.

The famous Pen Duick. Belonged to the late Eric Taberly who was responsible for getting France into sailing in the 70's and 80's. He owned a sucession of Pen Duicks from I to VI. Sadly he drowned after falling off this boat in the Irish sea.

I have more but I consider these to be the best. I may post more though later.

Seems extra-crass to me, but I guess if the government isn't helping with funding for your boat, you have to give top billing to the one who means more to you. ;D

Well the fellow who owns the boat just happens to also make them for a living. He built the boat (and another that was there) and was using it to advertise his company.

As for the techicalities of flag flying, no one seems to bother now. Only last month I saw an American yacht flying the Union flag as a courtisy flag (illegal) upside down (distress signal).

;D
