P.S.  The Royal Canadian Air Cadets camp at CFB Trenton opened last weekend.  They said they had to turn many young people down again this year due to the lack of civilian instructors again :(

I think they have the same problem over here, in that they can't get the civilian adult staff - mostly because people don't want the hassle of a Criminal Records Bureau check (like teachers/doctors etc) and the increase in focus and suspicion on people who volunteer to work with children. A very sad state of affairs.

It's nice to give the opportunities to the cadets though, particularly flying them, often on their first flights...

Quite so. Not to mention the danger of being sued if little Jimmy hurts himself. I would willingly offer my services but it's simply not worth the risk. The situation is quite ridiculous.

Hi Paul:
The United States Air Force did stuff with the Otter in combat that would make a Bush Pilots eyes water.

When the Royal Canadian Air Force operated the Otter, a typical load would be one pilot, one crewman, nine or ten full equipped para troopers who would leave by the port side dutch doors.
When I flew the aircraft with the RCAF before giving them all to the Air Force Reserve Units I remember carrying nine combat engineers, their gear and two (2) assault boats, one on each side and landing them on a pond a Piper Cub on floats couldn't get into. ;DLOL

When I was flying the Otter for a commercial operator they moved me over and onto the DC3s, I fought like hell to stay on the DHC-3 Otter but as pilots were a dime a dozen then and I wanted a job I had to take the move.  I sure did miss that old girl and still do.

As Charlie and Doug were saying about volunteers, I have to agree.  If they keep regulating things the way they do over here (including bake sales for charity) it won't be long before the day of the volunteer will be over.  Organizations like the Cancer Foundation, Heart and Stroke and a lot more will lose a lot of money and will be looking for the tax payer to pick up the tabs.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

As I was standing looking at the Otter last night, I thought "I should take an in-depth photo study of this fine example for Doug"......I didn't but could if there was any desire to see more close-ups of this derelict.... ;)

Ken people are having so many garage sales in Belleville and Trenton that they are almost a business.
Some folks actually have one every Saturday from what I hear. ::)
We very seldom stop at them unless I hear there is Aviation Artifacts there. :)
I do believe I heard something the other day about the municipalities granting one free yard sale a year and then the rest would have to have a permit.

Right glad am I Paul you are finding the DeHavilland of Canada products enlightening.  That gives me an idea of a new post :).

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
